Paywall conversion looks healthy until you split first-time and returning

Mixing first-time subscribers with people who already stored a card inflates a paywall step and hides the real first-purchase drop.

Receipts and a notebook beside a cup

A media app we reviewed treated “paywall viewed → paid” as one conversion. Returning readers with a card on file flew through. People who had never paid stalled on the list of telco billing versus cards versus an e-wallet they did not recognise.

Once we split the funnel, the first-time path was a different shape: an extra legal screen, a slower OTP, and a Malay copy line that wrapped under the price. The blended number had been flattering.

Conversion funnel analytics here is not a slogan. It is the refusal to average two populations who do not see the same screens. If your paywall event does not carry a first-time flag, the map should show that gap rather than a single cheerful percentage.
